1. Eliot regards the expression of emotion in art as the search for an "objective correlative", "a set of objects, a situation, a chain of events which shall be the formula of that particular emotion."  Did he practice what he preached in his Waste Land?  Give examples to support your argument.
2. Wordsworth said "poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings.", but he also insisted that poetry "takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility."  Do the two principles contradict?  If not, illustrate by quoting Wordsworth's poems.
3. Did mind and landscape mirror and echo each other in Romantic poetry?  How did Romantic poets muse reflectively on Nature?
4. As the pilgrims in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales are introduced, an impression is built up of a society in which traditional social bonds are being eroded by materialistic interests.  Present your ideas by citing the tales.
5. Different ages have appreciated (or criticized) different aspects of Shakespeare.  Comment on Shakespearean tragedy according to one of modern critical movements.
6. The modernist period is dominated by such novelists as Henry James, Joseph Conrad, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, D. H. Lawrence, E. M. Forster, etc.  Cite two of them and explain how they contributed to the modernist transformation of fiction.
7. What are the themes and techniques in Tennessee Williams's and Arthur Miller's plays?  Give at least one example of each and explain.
